Steel Magnolias (1989). A young beautician, newly arrived in a small Louisiana town, finds work at the local salon, where a small group of women share a close bond of friendship, and welcome her into the fold.
I feel like this is so woven into the pop culture lexicon, but weirdly I didn't actually really know what it was about? Anyway, I loved this weird movie. Sure, it's unfocused, sprawling, and picks and chooses which characters to add real depth to, but it just works for me. A lot of that is probably based on the strength of the cast (Sally Field and Shirley MaclLine in particular, the actresses you are!), but there's also just this throughline of big, messy, beating heart that gets me. 8/10.

SHOPPING WITH ART
౨ৎ Summary: it’s in the title ! Ballerina!reader x Art on a shopping date 🤍
౨ৎ Word count: 2k
౨ৎ Warnings: sugar baby! reader, mentions & talk of sex (duh !), semi public sexual acts, age gap (reader early 20’s) dilf age Art, fluff, needy reader, horny Art, mentions of Tashi in between, mutual pinning, petite!reader (sorry tall ppl), reader and Art are all over each other constantly
A/N: don’t know if I should classify this as a blurb or a fic but I’m gonna go with blurb since it’s short and sweet !!
“Dogs ?”
You had scrunched up your nose and shook your head terribly at Arts attempts to guess your favorite animal. He tilted his head as he looked down at you with a grin.
“Cats ?” He probed. You nodded pleased, with a giggle.
“Do I strike you as a dog person at all ?”
“No.” Art had laughed out and it sounded of wealth and pure adoration of you.
You two had been walking down Rodeo Drive in the mist of perfect weather on a bright day, Art had offered to take you shopping while Tashi took care of tennis business for the two of you. She requested some space and quietness for an hour or two — so of course you’d never pass up your expectation of basically trying on dresses for Art Donaldson as a living.
It still hadn’t hit you on the full one-eighty your life has taken from going from a lost ballerina to Art and Tashi’s young, beautiful, tennis protégé.
Or shared girlfriend. Whatever you had been.
You loved it. Especially days like this, you’d spend as much time as you could with Art when he wasn’t touring because he made you feel like it had only been the two of you on earth when you were together. You never stopped laughing, blushing, kissing… and a spawn of other things.
But when he’d been actually playing tennis, or doing things for his career like press or photoshoots. You missed him dearly. Even when he’d spend time with his daughter Lily.
It made your mood dim, and you’d find yourself dissociating from conversations or tennis to think about him or ponder when he’d be back to steal you away again. Tashi always caught you in the drift of it, but you’d snap right back to reality when you’d hear her say. “Okay. Art’s gonna take you out.” Your mood and demeanor would shift entirely.
“I feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.”
“Isn’t that movie controversial ?” Art questioned.
“Aren’t you much older than me ?” You replied as you glanced up at him, giving him every glitter of your wide Bambi eyes. He chucked.
“Oh. So should I walk on the other side of the sidewalk.. if that’s too much for you ?” He looked down at you as he moved from where you walked to the other side of the not so spacious side walk to prove his sarcasm.
“No!” You pleaded with a girlish laugh as you followed him anyways, bumping your shoulder into his arm on purpose not to be separated for another second.
You’d want to hold his hand so badly when you two would be out together, but with his public image being Tashi Duncan’s star husband, it wasn’t exactly the best decision when it came to the press — so even with as much as he wanted to, Tashi always told him to lay low when it came to physical contact with you in the open. Especially somewhere as public as Beverly Hills.
You’d never known where paparazzi had been hiding, lurking and waiting. And it wouldn’t be so easy for them to try and idealize it as Art Donaldson and his exceptionally younger “friend” that he takes shopping and on dates.
Tashi couldn’t control when you had been at home and essentially couldn’t keep your hands off each other entirely. Always hugging, cuddling, fucking. It didn’t matter. You were on him or vise versa, but when you’d go out Tashi would specifically insist “don’t touch each other.” before you’d leave.
But hiding didn’t transpire to you so much when you just completely couldn’t help yourself when it came to the man that made your heart flutter, you’d fought the limitations anyways.
Walking side by side you brushed your pinky against Arts much bigger hand. You saw him look down and a soft grin took upon his lips at the sight of your manicured pink tips grabbing at his hand. He could never resist you. locking pinky’s with yours, your smile had turned bashful but pleased as you’d walk together. Just praying no paps had caught the moment and you’d have to go through Tashi’s wrath later on.
♡
It was dress after dress you’d pick off of the rack, skirts, tops, and more shoes than you’d ever seen at once in person. But you absolutely adored this. Trying not to make another painfully high pitched sound when you’d find another pair that made your eyes go wide in awe.
Art was right there behind you as he chuckled at all of your darling reactions, finding it utterly too cute. You were like a doll and he’d spoil you till you’d probably pass out from exhaustion the moment you both got home from all the perks of shopping till you dropped. Literally.
“I don’t know. I love the waistline, but a deep v neck ? I just don’t see it.” You stepped out of the dressing rooms to where Art had been lounging on a chair since he wasn’t allowed in the actual dressing room area.
Art couldn’t say he didn’t know a thing or two when it came to a sense in fashion. Tennis was a sport based around the most expensive and luxury brands displaying their most fashionable and articulately put together pieces on star athletes like himself. But mainly living with the total of four ladies including the maid, had done his knowledge of the craft wonders.
“I think you look amazing in it, baby.” He implied, crystal blues tracing your perfect body cinched into the tight dress.
It made your breast sit in such a way that Art had to adjust the way he sat in his seat. You looked at yourself in the mirror while your hand ran down your curves. Your heels made you stand taller and your legs showcased eloquently.
One of the workers brought you a glass of champagne and you thanked her kindly before taking a sip, then turning to Art with a suggestive unsure look on your face.
“But do I look amazing though ?” You asked puzzled, with mostly sarcasm and art had shook his head, he chuckled as you glided back into the dressing rooms.
He even brought you things to try on as he just couldn’t pull back from his own suggestions of what he thought you looked to die for in.
“Art,” You turned to him opening up the curtain of the small space as you’d been in the mist of changing, just in your bra and panties.
“Put this on.” He passed you a dress and you were taken back by his desperation and need to see you in his choice of clothing. You stood and took it from him, but you couldn’t deny the slight pass of dominance from him turned you on a bit. You smiled at the curtain when he closed it quickly to leave so he wouldn’t get caught.
When you came out in what he had gave you, Art unfolded his leg and sat straighter in his chair as he examined the sight. And was it a sight to see.
The dress was white, a sixties kind of cut as it made your waist look otherworldly. The corset top made your torso extend and it was short enough that if you moved a little too much it would have been quite a show.
“So, what do you think of your outfit choice on me, Mr. Donaldson ?” You asked with your hands on your hips and the look on his face as his eyes graced over you had you blushing terribly.
Art had to take in a breath with an embarrassing place being lost for words, he stood up to walk towards you. His hand touched the delicate straps.
“Turn around.” he instructed.
“Okay. Bossy.” You joked, meanwhile he bit his lip to hold back nearly letting out an audible noise as he took in the way it cupped your ass just right. You were perfection in his eyes, all dolled up just for him. He licked his lips,
“You’re gorgeous, angel. Do you like it ? Because I love it, and I think you need it in your wardrobe. Well, not need, but it would be a nice touch.” He went on and you laughed at his high regard, your face heating up quite quickly now.
“I think it’s really pretty.” Your hand ran across the top that was embroidered with jewels, your smile enchanting as Art watched you.“next one coming up.”
You had walked by to go change again, but as you did you felt a smack on your ass and you turned around quickly to see Art grinning to himself when you gasped.
The responsible side of you would of protested as you remembered Tashi’s words, but you were anything but responsible when it came to your favorite blonde. You shook your head as your sly smile matched his and you went back into your dressing room.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t that long before Art had snuck in again and opened up the curtain, this time inserting himself into the room with you.
“Art!” You could hardly stop him before he had moved your hair out of the way and started attacking your neck with kisses, sucking in your sent as hands ran over your body,
“Fuck, you look good.” He breathed out as he kissed you and you’d fallen weak to his trap. Hands running to grab his hair as he groped your tits through the dress and kissed you sloppily. He towered over your dainty figure as he treated your body like clay for him to mold, you let out a whine from the back of your throat as he ran his tongue over yours.
His hands were flighting to unzip your dress while hiking it up your hips at the same time.
“Careful, it’s not mine,” you breathed out as Art peppered kisses anywhere he could.
“Oh, it will be yours. I’m buying it as soon as I’m done with you.” his tone was low and full of arousal as he pushed your front against the wall of the dressing room.
As much as you wanted him to fuck you right there, feel every inch of his need to have you take his cock while he treated you to an entire wardrobe that any girl your age would die for, was enough to make you shed your panties right then. But you had slipped from under his grasp.
“We can’t, we’re in public.” You uttered and Art had backed away from you with a groan as he ran his hands down his face and you grinned at the state you had gotten him in, uncomfortably hard and dick nearly ready to come through his fly at just the sight of you.
“Fine,” he sighed out and got ahold of himself before leaving again, you tried not to give him a mischievous smirk as you adjusted yourself and the dress. “Don’t think I don’t know how much you want it, you little minx, be ready for later because we’re not done here.”
You batted your eyelashes and acted all innocent as he shut the curtain and then you giggled to yourself. You had all the shoes and dresses you wanted ready by the time you exited again, and now with lips shimmering with gloss, you made eye contact with Art as he paid for all your new attire with pleasure. Licking his own lips every time he scanned over you, he carried all of your bags and he walked out with you happily.
Completely forgetting about the paparazzi, Art took your hand in his with ease. leading you down the walkway and you had bitten your lip under a satisfied little smile.
A/N: ugh ! I need that !

You thought that years after your daughter became a woman, parenting wouldn't be a problem in your life anymore. You were wrong. As your eyes read the letter in your hand, over and over again, your mind screamed: This is all his fault!!! And of course you knew it wasn't directly his fault, after all, your ex-husband resided at King's Landing, and probably by now he'd be reading the letter, same as you, after receiving this dreadful news. Your sweet young daughter has just got engaged to Cregan Stark.
Daemon's nostrils dilated in anger. Two weeks ago, Viserys had asked him to visit Winterfell and make presence at Cregan's takeover ceremony, as he just became the new Lord of Winterfell. The Prince was ready to do so, but his precious Daenys asked him to go on her father and uncle's behalf. Now, Daemon would take the blame as he knew it was, in fact, his fault.
As the The Rogue Prince went over the words written on the paper, he could already feel your future judgmental gaze burning him alive. He had thrown his daughter to the wolves, and she thought she was prepared to lead the pack. She asked to go and he let her. Now, he was invited to a wedding at The North.
This wouldn't be happening if she lived in The Vale with you. But no, she had to choose daddy. She would always choose daddy. The Vale didn't had a dragonpit, The Vale didn't had her silver-haired family, The Vale didn't had anything but cows and sheeps and grass. But The Vale had you, and sometimes Daenys would stay for a few weeks with you, even if that meant that her dragon would be flying around Runestone and scaring the villagers.
You had received a raven from Daemon, inviting you to King's Landing so he could escort you to Winterfell on dragonback. Though you preferred the more traditional method of traveling on horseback, you accepted.
The capitol greeted you with its usual oppressive heat and unpleasant smells. It was as you remembered it: hot, congested, and overwhelmingly unpleasant. The last time you had been here was for Rhaenyra's engagement, which had turned into a wedding—and a funeral. The bitterness of that memory lingered.
The court's reception of you was as cold as the city was warm. You were an outsider—no Targaryen lineage, no purple eyes, and no place in the intricate web of court politics. Queen Alicent, though not a Targaryen herself, had embraced the court's customs, which had twisted her children into incestuous little monsters. And as for the heir to the Iron Throne, Rhaenyra's disdain for you was palpable, perhaps fueled by her own obsession with Daemon. The rest of the court's members paid little heed to your presence.
Your carriage delivered you to the Dragonpit, where Daemon was preoccupied with Caraxes, his dragon. The beast’s excitement was evident in its whistling and the way it eagerly twisted its neck to catch sight of you.
Daemon's scowl was familiar as he wrestled with Caraxes. “I wondered if you’d actually come,” he grumbled, his voice a mix of irritation and begrudging relief.
“You knew I had no choice, someone had to come fix up your mess." You shrugged, getting closer to pet the animal.
"My mess!? I don't remember telling Daenys to marry Cregan fucking Stark!" The Rogue Prince scoffed, his voice sounding a little high pitched, "I gave her a task, It's not my fault she has done something completely different."
You hissed at his audacious condescension, "You gave her your task, your responsibility. It's your fault Daemon, as everything is always your fault."
The Rogue Prince frowned as he hopped on his dragon's back, "What's that supposed to mean?"
You chose to ignore him, but accepted his help to get on top of Caraxes' back.
It took eight agonizing hours upon the skies on way to Winterfell, and you could only imagine how many Stark babies your daughter had made by now. It was quite silent upon the clouds, and you could feel the cold air of The North starting to freeze your bones. You wondered if Daenys had adapted herself to the cold already. As always, all your thoughts were on your daughter.
A soft, almost comical tune drifted over as Daemon hummed in High Valyrian while steering the dragon. You rolled your eyes and snorted.
"What’s so amusing now?" Daemon asked, arching an eyebrow.
"Just thinking about how we're going to stop her from marrying the North’s icy prince," you replied with a sigh.
Daemon’s eyes sparkled with mischief. "We should act like we're totally onboard with this. I'll get Cregan to admit he's marrying her just to get his hands on political power, and you, with your talent for manipulation, can work your magic on her."
You shot him a sharp look. "Oh, right. Because your idea of ‘support’ is turning into a two-faced schemer, and my ‘magic’ is just being a professional puppet master. Perfect."
Daemon chuckled at your response, his gaze fixed on the icy expanse below. "It’s not a matter of ‘manipulating’ her, it’s about protecting her. If this marriage goes south, it’s not just her future at risk—it’s the stability of my entire line."
“Stability? You’ve always cared more about your pride and dragons than anything else,” you retorted, shivering slightly as the cold air intensified.
“Pride and dragons have their place, but you underestimate my concern for Daenys,” Daemon said, his voice softening. “She’s my daughter too. If this marriage is a political maneuver or a trap, I need to know. And unfortunately I need your help to do that.”
The snow-covered landscape of Winterfell was becoming clearer as Caraxes descended. You glanced at Daemon, seeing a flicker of genuine worry in his eyes. For a moment, the old animosity between you seemed to melt away, replaced by a shared concern for your daughter.
As Caraxes touched down in the snow-covered grounds of Winterfell, the stark chill of the North bit through your layers. Daemon’s expression was a mix of determination and frustration, and you couldn’t help but notice how the grandeur of Winterfell seemed to dwarf the fiery presence of his dragon.
You and Daemon dismounted swiftly, the crunch of snow beneath your boots echoing in the silent, frigid air. The imposing structure of Winterfell loomed ahead, a stark contrast to the warmth and opulence of King's Landing.
“The Starks will be expecting us,” Daemon said tersely, his gaze scanning the frosty landscape. “We need to play our parts carefully.”
You nodded, still bristling from the cold and the tension between you two. “I’ll do my best. But if this whole affair is some kind of power grab or an elaborate ploy against us, I want to make sure Daenys is safe.”
Daemon’s expression softened again, a rare glimpse of vulnerability crossing his features. “We’ll find out soon enough. For now, let’s just hope this is a union built on more than just politics.”
As you approached the gates of Winterfell, the grandeur of the ancient castle was both intimidating and awe-inspiring. The guards let you pass with minimal fuss, their cold eyes assessing you and Daemon with practiced neutrality. The hallways of Winterfell were lined with Stark banners, and the warmth from the hearths provided a small relief from the biting cold outside.
You were soon ushered into a grand hall where Cregan Stark awaited. His presence was as formidable as his reputation, with an aura of quiet strength that seemed to fill the room. Beside him was Daenys, looking regal but noticeably tense, her eyes meeting yours with a mix of relief and apprehension.
“Mother, Father,” Daenys greeted, her voice steady despite the situation. “I’m glad you’ve arrived safely.”
You offered her a warm but concerned smile, taking in her attire and the unmistakable signs of stress on her face. "Daenys, dear. You look… well. But we need to talk."
Cregan stepped forward, his expression courteous but his eyes sharp. "Welcome to Winterfell. I trust the journey was not too arduous?"
Daemon gave a curt nod, his eyes fixed on Cregan. “It was long, but we’ve managed. I hope the arrangements for the wedding are proceeding as planned?”
Cregan’s expression remained neutral. “Indeed. We’ve made all necessary preparations. I’m eager to discuss the future and the alliance this marriage represents.”
As the conversation continued, you couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of a complex and possibly perilous chapter. You knew you’d have to navigate not only the intricacies of court politics but also the fraught emotions of a father who was clearly worried about his daughter’s well-being.
The banquet that followed was a display of Northern hospitality, but your mind was elsewhere, focusing on how to ensure Daenys’s future was secure. As the evening wore on, you planned your next steps carefully, knowing that every word and action would impact the delicate balance of relationships that had already been strained.
As you finally retired to your quarters for the night, you and Daemon shared a moment of silence. The weight of the situation was palpable, and while the old arguments and grievances were still there, a shared purpose had emerged. Protecting Daenys was now the priority, and perhaps, in this endeavor, you and Daemon could find some common ground, if only for a little while.
In the stillness of the night, you lay in the unfamiliar bed of Winterfell, the grandeur of the castle doing little to soothe your growing unease. The banquet had been a parade of forced smiles and veiled threats, and the cold seemed to seep through your bones with each passing moment.
A knock at your door broke the silence, and you opened it to find Daemon, his face lit by the flickering torchlight. His usually stern demeanor was tinged with a rare hint of vulnerability.
"Thought I'd find you awake," Daemon said, stepping inside, uninvited "We need to be extra cautious. Cregan Stark is shrewd, and there’s more to this marriage than meets the eye."
You raised an eyebrow, crossing your arms. "Is that so? Because it sounds like you’re just now realizing what kind of game the Starks are playing. Should I prepare myself for a lecture on how wolves hunt in packs?"
Daemon scowled, clearly irritated. "I don't need you to remind me. What I need is to figure out if this alliance is a genuine union or a clever trap."
You snorted, leaning against the wall. "And you think I’m here for the fun of it? We need to be careful, Daemon. You can’t just stomp around like a bull in a wolf’s den and expect to come out unscathed."
Daemon’s eyes flashed with irritation. "I’m not planning on stomping around. I’m suggesting we handle this with some subtlety. Unlike some people who seem to think they can charm their way through every situation."
You gave him a sharp look. "Oh, don’t start with the high-handed approach. We both know you’re just as likely to spark a conflict as you are to prevent one. If you want to be useful, maybe try blending in with the Northerners instead of prancing around like a dragon amongst wolves."
He narrowed his eyes. "And maybe you could stop pretending you have all the answers and start cooperating for once. We’re in this together, whether you like it or not."
With a huff, you pushed away from the wall. "Fine. Let’s agree to not kill each other while we’re here. But remember, Daemon, while you’re plotting your next move, I’ll be the one trying to keep the peace and avoid any unnecessary skirmishes."
Daemon’s expression softened just a fraction. "Agreed. I’ll focus on not antagonizing everyone, if you focus on not making me look like a fool."
As he turned to leave, you caught his arm, a smile playing on your lips. "If this goes south, I expect a full report on how you are to blame."
He shot you a sardonic smile. "I’ll make sure to include a chapter on your unmatched ability to defuse a crisis."
With that, he left, and you returned to the window, staring out at the snow-covered grounds. The chill of Winterfell seemed to amplify the tensions between you, but perhaps, with a bit of wit and a lot of careful maneuvering, you could unravel the true nature of this alliance and ensure Daenys's future wasn't just a pawn in a Stark game.

When You Tell Them About The Older Men You Liked
————
COD Men Headcanons
————
König
Legend of Korra: Tenzin
"HE'S A CARTOON!" König yells.
"I know."
"WHY!? AND HOW OLD WERE YOU!?"
"I don't know why? I think I was...13?"
"Scheiße, Baby (shit, baby)." He curses under his breath.
"Yeah, I think that's when I knew I liked older men."
König was still speechless. He learned something new now, how you like older men, and the reason why you two are together because she like him because he was older and larger.
The topic was brought up due to him saying one of his daughters favorite cartoon character was a bit hot, so it was only right you brought up an old crush of yours
————
Ghost
Robert Downey Jr.
"I mean that makes sense," Ghost says. "Could have been worse."
"How worse?"
"You know, I'm not gonna say, but I get it. I mean it's fucking Iron Man, of course a lot of people are gonna like him, like fuck, I fucking like him, love, I will marry him if I could."
Honestly you learn that Ghost is basically secretly gay for Robert but I mean come on, agree with the man here.
The topic was brought up because you asked him, if he a celebrity crush on a older person and he said Julia Roberts, so it was only right she said Robert Downey Jr.
————
Price
Hugh Jackman
"Do not get me started," Price says.
"I mean you saw the movie! His body, come on now, John."
"I know, love, I saw it, and I saw how you looked at him, you like Hugh? I fucking love Hugh, baby." Price says, he was jealous that you told him Hugh Jackman was hot and sexy, and how you had a crush on him
"Baby deep down, I gay for Hugh," Price says, as you laughed and lightly tapped his shoulder
The topic was brought up when Price and you saw Deadpool and Wolverine and the part where Hugh had his suit shocked off him and you see a clear view of Hugh's body and his hairy body, he became a bit jealous
————
Soap
Gravity Falls: Stanford Pines
Honestly, I would say don't ask but the topic was brought up because he said the assistant from PowerPuff Girls was sexy, so you pulled the 6-fingered Grunkle from Gravity Falls
"JK Simmons has a tight hold on me." You tell him.
"Seriously?"
"You said Sarah Bellum was hot, so it only fits I say, Stanford Pines is hot."
"HE'S 60 YEARS OLD!"
"You're point? SARAH DOESN'T EXIST!"
"NEITHER DOES FORD! AND I'M PRETTY SURE HE'S MARRIED A TRIANGLE!"
AN: This is off topic (sort of) but he also voice acted for Tenzin (in case you didn't know).
————
Alejandro
Keanu Reeves
"Have you seen him in John Wick?"
"Yes. mi amor, I know." He chuckles. "He's a badass."
"Exactly, like Jesus, he can kill me all he wants to as long as I get to look at him."
"God, amor," he chuckles again.
The topic was brought up because you two finally had the time to sit down and watch the John Wick movies and now you understand why middle aged women love Keanu Reeves
————
Gaz
Shemar Moore
You two talked about Criminal Minds, how you love Spencer Reid but you mainly loved Shemar Moore the most, and how it feels like every time you watch something he's always in the movie or show, and you like it
"I see it," Gaz says. "Jesus." In the show, Shemar didn't have a shirt on and Gaz finally understood.
"See what I mean."
"You've definitely have a type, hot men," he says through a laugh and you light punched his arm.
————
Alex
Bruce Wayne
"Bruce...Wayne..." Alex says.
"Yep."
"Are you...Are you okay?"
"Definitely not," Y/n says, in a serious tone.
The topic was brought up after you two discussed comic books and which characters you two thought were hot or sexy, he brought up Selina Kyle which who was suppose to be Bruce Wayne's girlfriend/Fiancé.

ANDREW GARFIELD LOVES SYDNEY ADAMU /AYO EDEBIRI. THE BEAR AFTER THE HUNT
In an interview about After the Hunt movie, Andrew Garfield was asked which actor makes him happy when he sees them on screen
He thought about it
Said two people
Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri
He said they could be mother and daughter
Same mouth
Same big beautiful smile
Big personalities
That they were both absolutely joyous
So joyous in fact that you wonder if there's bodies buried somewhere
But I think everyone should know that yes some people in this life have a joyous sprit and heart and it's genuine.
Protect these people at all costs.
Also this is how Andrew talks about Ayo after only a few months of knowing her
Richie/ Ebon Moss Bachrach has also been greatly vocal about her

Men have, however, appropriated for themselves positive references for the female-specific reproductive process in metaphorical extensions of the vocabulary that they attribute to thinking and learning. Given the fact that men have cherished for millenia the idea that they alone are capable of thinking, it is ironic that they should preempt birth as a vehicle. Men say that they"conceive ideas" and "give birth" to inventions. For example, in his Introduction to the Oresteia, Robert Fagles (1975) described what he called "the pregnancies of Aeschylus's style" and characterized the language of the play as "giving birth to a new drama and a new poetic voice" (36-37).
In spite of this appropriation of the birth process, other common metaphors simply extend the cultural asymmetries of mother and father as verbs. Although some countries are called "the motherland," others, like Germany, are "the fatherland," and the primacy of fatherhood is emphasized in numerous expressions so common we forget that they're figures of speech. Once men "conceive" of ideas, they are described as seminal. Men disseminate information to students attending their seminars. There are no "ovular ideas" and we don't "ovulate information," even though the [- male] metaphor would be more accurate. In those long genealogical lists of the old testament, only the males who "begat" and their sons are named; the women and daughters who must have participated remain nameless and invisible.
Men talk about 'the fathers" of a country, wax eloquent about building on the "wisdom of their fathers and forefathers" and living by "the rules set down by their fathers." They honor each other's "brainchildren" by saying so-and-so was "the father of American parasitologists" or "the father of the Cocktail Age." Although the predicate semantics of English treats the verb as a single, instantaneous event, the noun extends metaphorically throughout the social structure. The fathers become the creators, like Zeus, who bring forth and define ideas and objects for all time, whereas the verb mother is socially defined as a nurturing activity that takes place within the limited, localized context of the female domain. Rarely, if at all, is an outstanding woman similarly hailed. "Necessity may be the mother of invention" but invention, according to PUD, belongs to men. The male domain, in contrast, isn't only global, it's cosmic. C. S. Lewis (1964) admired the novelist George MacDonald because he learned from his father that "Fatherhood must be at the core of the universe" and taught that "the relation of Father and Son is of all relations the most central" (5).

My neighbour Rúben | Chapter 3
Previous chapter | Next chapter
Masterlist
"Aww, sweetheart. I'm so glad you were able to come" grandma said, giving me a hug.
"I would not miss grandad's birthday for anything in the world."
"Not like your father" he said, also hugging me. The moment my dad knew I was coming back to London, he suddenly had an important meeting to attend and he couldn't join us all to celebrate. "He is a coward. Not being able to face his own daughter..."
"Let's leave that conversation for another day, shall we?" grandma said. "Today is a day to celebrate that she has a new job. C'mon, tell us everything about this Spanish girl. Is she posh? Where is the kid's dad?"
"Yes, share all the gossip with your grandma" grandad laughed, sitting down on his big chair.
"She isn't posh. Everything Lucy has is because she's worked her ass off to get it. Language, sorry."
"Don't worry, darling. Living in the North does that to you" grandma said, making grandad snort.
"We also swear on this part of the country, you know?" he said.
"Whatever" grandma replied, rolling her eyes. "What about the dad? You didn't mention anything."
"She divorced from her husband last year. Well, they actually are still divorcing, there is nothing official. But they went their separate ways a year ago."
"A divorce lawyer getting divorced. Funny" grandad said.
"Getting a divorce is never funny. Especially when there is a child involved. How is she dealing with it?"
"Julia is ok. Her dad also is a lawyer, so she is used to only seeing him from time to time."
"That is so sad... But what happened? Why did they get a divorce?"
"You are so noisy" grandad chuckled.
"I just want to know who is the woman my granddaughter is working for!"
"And knowing the reason why she got a divorce is important because..."
"Because!" she said.
"I don't know why she is divorcing from her husband. We don't know each other that well just yet" I shrugged. Which was a lie. Lucy and I had instantly connected and shared all our dramas with each other.
"Anyway, let's talk about more important things" grandad said before grandma could ask anything else. "You are coming to the game tomorrow, aren't you?"
"It is your birthday present, grandad. Of course I am." He's been an Arsenal fan since he was a little kid, and every time my father allowed it, he would take me to one of their games. Tomorrow they are playing against one of the big ones, Manchester City, and he wants me to go with him. I don't follow football that much, but I always enjoy going to the games and spending some time just the two of us.
"Oh, yes. And Robert is taking his grandson with him too. When was the last time you saw Harry?" grandma asked.
Harry... The grandson of my grandad's best friend, the one they've wanted me to marry since we both were kids, and also the one who tried to kiss me the last time we saw each other, getting a punch on the nose as an answer.
"I can't remember when I last saw him" I lied.
"Well, I'm sure he is looking forward to seeing you" grandma said.
━━━━━━❃━━━━━━
"This can't be your granddaughter!" Robert said when we met outside the Emirates Stadium. "Where did the girl with the pigtails go?"
"Hi" I said. I think I haven't worn pigtails since I was three, but oh well. "Harry."
"Hello" he replied, not meeting my eyes. It looked like what had happened during our last encounter definitely still was in his head. Good. Now he probably knew what happens when someone tells you no and you insist.
"Let's go inside, shall we?" grandad said. "Today is a big day, we'll probably have to wait longer than usual at the queue."
Once inside the stadium, we were seated next to the benches, getting to see the players very close, especially when walking in and out of the tunnel.
"Ah, look at this atmosphere" grandad said. "Those City boys aren't used to something like this back home, are they, Robert?"
"They definitely aren't" he replied, both men starting to laugh.
"But at least they win something" Harry said under his breath. Since he was sitting next to me, I was the only one who heard him.
"Who do you truly support?" I whispered.
"Chelsea. But don't tell my grandad, it'll break his heart."
"Your secret is safe with me. You know I'm really good at that."
"Yeah..." he replied, his ears turning bright red.
The first half of the game was just City attacking and Arsenal trying to defend themselves, somehow making it to the half-time with no goals on any side. As the players started walking towards the tunnel, there was one that caught my attention, one that was arguing with another teammate. Before he disappeared, he looked up, our eyes meeting just for a brief moment, and I could swear I had seen him before. But where? On tv? Online? There was something too familiar about him to be just a complete stranger.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Harry said.
"What?"
"You are completely gone, definitely thinking about something."
"It's just that a City player looked familiar. I guess I've seen him somewhere before."
"Maybe out in Manchester? You live in the same city."
"I don't think these guys and I visit the same places" I chuckled.
"You never know."
"Anyway, I'm going to the bathroom. Grandad, do you want a drink or something?"
"I'm fine. Thank you, darling."
When I made it back, the second half had already started.
"Which player looked familiar?" Harry asked me when I sat down.
"I don't know. A tall one, brown hair. He was arguing with another one that looked tiny next to him.”
"Dias?"
"Uh? Why are you speaking in Spanish?"
"That's his name. Well, his last name. When City came out, he turned around and looked to where we are sitting with a confused look. Maybe he also recognized you."
"Nah, that's impossible. Someone probably insulted him and that's why he looked like that."
I had never met a City player, had I? Someone would have told me, they supposedly are superstars.
The game obviously ended with City winning but just by one goal, and grandad and Robert seemed to be very proud about it. We were still on our seats, waiting until most people had left the stadium, when I found myself looking again at the player from the first half. He was giving some interviews, and the way he was standing while talking, made him look even more familiar. Who was this stupidly handsome man? Because he was handsome. And hot. Very hot. His t-shirt was sticking to his body, letting you see his very defined abs and pectorals. And his arms... His arms were the size of my head.
When he finished talking, he smiled at the reporter before saying goodbye, and it clicked.
"No way" I gasped.
"What?" Harry said next to me.
"Who is he?" I asked, nodding towards the City player.
"Oh, that's the one I told you was looking this way. Dias."
"But you said that's his last name, right? What's his name?"
"Rúben. Rúben Dias."
Rúben. My Chris Evans. The hot neighbour. It was him. He was a fucking football player. And not any player, no. A Manchester City one. And now he was looking at us, at me, trying to figure out why I also looked familiar.
"He's looking at us again" Harry said. "Are you sure you don't know each other?"
"We..." But before I was able to say that we didn't, Rúben was smiling and waving at me. And I was waving back, also smiling. But while he gave me a cute smile, I probably was smiling like an idiot or with the ugliest grin.
"You were saying..."
"I don't know him. I just waved back because..."
"He's hot" Harry said.
"Yes. That's exactly why. Wouldn't you have done the same with a hot girl?"
"Maybe... But are you really sure you don't know each other?"
"I'm really sure, Harry. Stop asking."
"Ok" he said, definitely not believing me.
"Alright kids, ready to leave? I'm starving" grandad said.
"Ready" I replied. Anything to stop Harry from asking more questions, and to stop me from thinking about the fact that Rúben, the neighbour, actually was Rúben Dias, Manchester City player and football star.

Buzzfeed:The 10 Times Harry Styles and Y/n Y/l/n Made Us Believe in Love
A/n: I have been working in this for some time, I was pretty much inspired by my Jack Harlow piece, someone send a ask about doing one for Harry, and it’s just fluff💗 all the pictures are just illustrative, there is no face-claim, nothing, it’s just o ‘illustrate’ the article (?)
The 10 Times Harry Styles and Y/n Y/l/n Made Us Believe in Love
10. They Have Known Each Other for Years Before They (Finally) Started to Date
When it comes to famous couple we hardly ever know how they met, but not with this hot couple. It was Stevie Nicks who first spilled the beans:superstar Harry Styles and nepotism babe Y/n Y/l/n met back in May 2015 at the backstage of a Fleetwood Mac concert in London, while attending with mutual friends and Mr.Styles took her out for a bite afterwards. According to rumours Styles and Miss Y/n were seen out and about around London during the month of May and she was photographed in a One Direct concert in Wales, and then Harry reportedly dated a string of Victoria Secret models and Camilla Rowe…
Asked about it in a interview with Vanity Fair, Y/l/n said:”I was very young back then, just seventeen, still a little green and naive in this whole ‘love game’, we liked each other very much, but at that time we would have just… crashed and burned. Feelings were hurt, but it’s safe to say we’ve kept special places for each other in our hearts, and when we met again at Shangri-La we just fitted together…”
A Bonus: While promoting her new movie with Julia Roberts, Y/n Y/l/n was asked by James Corden about the rumor that her famous mom ‘just loves to public embarrasses her’, to which Y/n gave us a funny story: ‘So, as a teen I just loved Harry Styles, you know: the hair, the eyes, the dimples… I was like: we are soulmates, we are destined for each other. I had a framed poster of him in my bedroom. So… we are traveling from London to LA, my mom had just finished a movie, we are at the airport, and a few foot away, handsome as ever is Harry Styles, and his whole boyband… my mom recognized him from my posters and basically all my gadgets background, and she goes: excuse me… hi, Harry, my name is Y/m/n Y/l/n, my daughter just loves you… and she wouldn’t stop… let’s just say I spent a long time hiding in the ladies restroom’ Y/l/n added: ‘Harry actually finds the story funny and always tells all of our friends’.
There it goes: Y/n Y/l/n is jus like every other teenage with a Harry Styles crush.
9. They Rekindled Their Romance at the 2019 Met Gala
Harry co-chaired the event. Y/n made her solo debut—this is her third year attending the gala, but the first time without either her famous parents—, she attended as a guest of Gucci, dressed in a green-glittered-feathered gown custom designed for her by Alessandro Michele. The twenty four years old singer and the twenty years old actress were pictured in he pink carpet and, I mean, just the way they looked at each other screams volumes.
We may not know what happened inside the gala, but we can have a idea by the after party picture, and let’s just say:you can manage to see a photo of either of them where the other isn’t by their side or the background.
Dating rumors started after pictures were published of Harry and Y/n leaving the after-after party in the same car with Styles gentlemanly carrying Y/l/n red gown’s train.
The same month ‘sources close to the couple’ reported that Harry and Y/n actually met months in advance to the gala ‘Y/n was working with Mark Ronson at Shangri-La in Malibu, her and H stared as friends, just going out and spending time together, things changed in Italy in early 2019 when they decided to go together for fittings with Alessandro’.
When questioned about the young couple went with the standard: We’re just friends.
8. Their Romance is Packed With PDA
Though they keep their ‘Just Friends’ answers, the couple haven’t shied away from some good old Public Displays of Affection. And this says something when we’re talking about Harry Styles.
And they’re cutie.
7. We Got a Glimpse of Their Romance in August 2019 When Photos of Y/n Got Shared in The Internet
O-kay, it’s totally not okay for someone close to you—someone you clearly trust— to leak private pictures of your private instagram to the world. Y/n private IG account went from 167 followers o 165 after pictures the actress posted on her profile were printed and leaked.
That being said… We can’t deny Y/n and Harry are a cute and romantic couple:
I mean: she even uses his picture as a book-marker, this is pure fluff
6. Fans Noted This Little Detail in Paps Photos
The couple has a matching tattoo, and we’re dying. Nothing screams ‘Love’ like a matching tattoo.
5. That Lego Bouquet
Y/n was there for her man during SNL, as Harry was both host and musical guest. And she got him a bouquet… of Legos.
Sources said ‘Y/n has been here with Styles all week, Harry, surprisingly is a very shy guy, so she was always keeping him calm and relaxed, helping him with his anxiety, and just being a helping hand, they keep in their own bubble but are very approachable’.
4. December Was a Emotional Month For Harry and Y/n ‘s Fans
Little Women was released and our girl slayed as Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation. During promotion Y/l/n was paired with Pugh and Chalamet, and those tree were the trio of BFF’s we needed. Y/l/n and Chalamet chemistry—this is their second movie together— generated a few rumors of troubles in paradise.
But it was all just rumors, as Y/n was photographed at Styles one-night-only show at The Forum in Los Angeles,
She was once again by his side in London.
The bomb that broke millions of hearts came in 28 December.
In a joined statement was released by Styles and Y/l/n teams… After Academy Award winner filmmaker and producer, Y/f/n Y/l/n, communicated to the world in his official website that his wife and him ‘are happy to announce the marriage of their youngest daughter to Mr. Harry E. Styles’ all very formal like Y/f/n usually is.
The couple got married in 18 December at Hampstead Town Hall in London, both their families were in attendance. The couple asked for respect of their privacy, and announced that they would continue to live bi-continental.
3. Harry Styles Music Videos and… Surprises.
We hoped, but we weren’t sure, that we would see Y/n in Styles Music Videos, I mean, isn’t a rule somewhere that if you got a gorgeous, Academy nominated actress for a WIFE, you must put her in your MV’s? No?
Harry didn’t disappoint us. The singer and his wife frolicking by the beach, feeding each other fruits is a state of mind.
It also marks the debut of Y/n in Styles public feed.
Styles was praised by models in his video for asking for consent to touch them while filming, it was also said that the couple is very much in love and still in their honeymoon phase, just enjoying being together with one saying ‘when they looked at each other, you sometimes felt like you’re invading a private moment, Harry wouldn’t stop gushing over Y/n and how she inspired his more soft romanic songs’ and ‘they are just so nice to everyone’.
The surprise came months later during the release of ‘Golden’. The song is said to be about Y/l/n, with fans nothing that the actress and our favorite nepo babe has ‘you’re so golden’ tattooed in her ribs since 2017.
The video was filmed in the Amalfi Coast, with Styles running and driving around, Y/l/n doesn’t show up until the end, looking very gorgeous in white… and sporting a small baby bump. Yep, the couple probably had the best pregnancy announcement of 2020.
2. Harry Styles Being a Supportive Husband
2021 was a great year for Y/n Y/l/n, and no one can deny.
The actress welcomed her first child in early February. She went on to own a Golden Globe and a Emmy for her Netflix Miniseries.
The couple had their red carpet debut while attending the Grammys, with Styles proudly showing off his wife, the actress got candid while admitting that it was her first time going out without the baby, and though the child was with ‘grannie Anne’ the new mom still felt anxious.
In a interview with Kelly Clarkson while talking about parenthood Y/n said ‘It’s a crazy rollercoaster, they grow so fast! We decided, for now, not to have a nanny, we just want to enjoy all those little moments that we can, so it is being kinda of nuts, but we have a great team and a very supportive family. Harry is great, he aced the nappy game and night feeding, he’s a amazing daddy, we often joked that H had amazing fun uncle potential, but he’s positively surprising us all, he just goes beyond, the best parenthood partner a girl could ask for. Definitely my favorite dilf.’
1.Harry’s House.
Months before the ‘Adore You’ crooner announced his new album, Styles shared a candid picture of himself, his wife Y/n and their babygirl Delilah, with the caption: Home.
In early April the lyrics of ‘As It Was’ confounded fans a little, until four months later the couple announced the birth of their second daughter, Talulah, and their relocation to England in a more permanent scale. The couple not only has been living in London since mid 2021, they also acquired two homes in Styles motherland. Styles in a interview with Apple Music, said about his move: ‘A lot has change in my life the last few years, my home are now three amazing girls, my gorgeous wife and our two baby-daughters, but England is my comfortable place, initially we moved because I was going to film a movie, Y/l was still pregnant with Talulah, one night I come home after shooting and my wife goes: what do you think about moving here for real? And she goes on: I just spent an afternoon at a public park with Lilah without men with cameras following us around. It was a no brainer decision, we’re very happy, Lulah was born in London, my mum and sister are always around, I’ve never been happier’.

Leave The World Behind... (Spoilers)
This Sam Esmail Netflix movie is a gem... It doesn't just give us insight into what could be if our nation pushes the reset button... To have us become prey as Americans... and who will be ready. It dishes out some characterizations for societies stereotypes for a demographic.
Julia Roberts: Amanda, scene of her listening to R&B in the car (Blackstreet). You can tell she used to ride black dick in college. When George comes to the door the racism sets in... the man is wearing a suit with his daughter as a companion but FEAR sets in. Can't trust, doesn't believe black excellence can achieve this house even the expensive car. Finally that fear dissipates and leads to her wanting to fuck him down while her husband is outside.
Mahershala Ali: George, the docile negro. To acquire in this world one must play by a set of rules. It's evident he's done so. Non combative, don't rock the boat and accommodate. When his daughter talks to him while they're sleeping in the basement after the family returns... it's eye opening to his submissiveness. Are you prepared to stand strong for us because her strength will not tolerate his weakness.
Ethan Hawke: Clay, King Carefree... smoked all his brain cells away since his teenage years that he only functions with a wife assist. Hasn't thought for himself in ages.
Myha'la Herrold: Ruth, the problematic black woman. Her assertiveness is an issue. Dominance makes people uneasy. Honesty and intelligence seen as attitude. The hair wet commentary, can't just exist. Fast, have you ever fucked your students, hyper sexualized.
Charlie Evans: Archie... Grade A little prick with the weakest gene code. Killed the role of a young gamer, horny without a AK-47.
Vanessa Aspillaga: Salvadora, the housekeeper that no one ever listens to when speaking facts because somehow society believes speaking Spanish is a lack of intelligence and/or subhuman.
Kevin Bacon: Danny, straight shooter, military ready... but a big softy.
Farrah Mackenzie: Rose/Rosie... to be seen and not heard. Creating a bubble that you live in with blinders is a happy place. It's not just about technology but a way of life. It leads to selfishness where even a simple thought of caring about an outside entity is foreign, alien. Quintessential white woman.
It's giving...

I find it funny that in the movie Julia Robert’s daughter is obsessed with the show FRIENDS, when Julia Roberts guest starred in that very show. Did the daughter ever see that episode and go “Omg mom, this woman looks just like you!!”?

LEE STARKEY. THE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF "BEATLE" RINGO STARR IS TODAY A FASHION DESIGNER AND HAS OPENED A FASHION BOUTIQUE IN HOLLYWOOD
1991, October 17th - ¡Hola! magazine, Spain
The Yesterday and Today of the protagonists of the news
LEE STARKEY. THE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF "BEATLE" RINGO STARR IS TODAY A FASHION DESIGNER AND HAS OPENED A FASHION BOUTIQUE IN HOLLYWOOD
The mythical Hollywood of the big stars looks at Lee Starkey, youngest daughter of Ringo Starr, the ex-member of The Beatles. Lee is now twenty-one years old, but she seems younger (“People look at me" –she explains– "and still think that I’m thirteen”) and she has become owner of a “boutique” in the elegant district of Los Angeles, where she sells bright spangles trousers, daring miniskirts and psychedelic fur tunics like if they were hot pastries. The shop is at the heart of the most fashion district of LA, Melrose Avenue, where famous stars like Madonna, Michelle Pfeiffer and Julia Roberts make their purchases.
“Daddy hasn’t helped me with money”, tells Lee, while she shows us her most favourite clothes designed by herself and her thirty-year-old partner Christian Paris. Lee continues explaining that her father gave her moral support and brought lots of friends to the opening of the boutique, which was last month [sic]. “He’s much exited" – she remarks – "that in the end I’ve found something that I love to do”.
Lee Starkey – that’s Ringo’s real surname – was five years old when her mother, Maureen, and her very famous father divorced in 1975. Both of them married again: her mother with Isaac Tigrett, Hard Rock Cafe founder, and Ringo with the actress Barbara Bach. However, when the youngest daughter of the former Beatle opened her “boutique” in Hollywood both parents attended with her brothers Zak, 25, and Jason, 24 [sic], to wish her luck.
“I’m not an expert of The Beatles”, admits Lee with a smile, adding next: “If I want to know something about them I ask to my father. But I’m a drawer and designer of sixties fashion. Is in those years where I find my inspiration. I’ve tried to bring the vibrations, the colours and the freedom of that style to the nineties”.
In what there is not any doubt is that with their store, Planet Alice, Lee is making a good business, showing that her idea was spot on. Lee, before being devoted to this, tried to introduce herself to the acting world, went to a make-up school and even she wanted to play drums. In the end she met her partner, Christian Paris, a well-known clothes designer of whom she says: “We are very affectionate to each other and this is platonic”. Paris was already owner of a Planet Alice shop in London, namely in Portobello. Also he owns one of the most fashionable discotheques in London, Alice in Wonderland. Now attending to Lee’s wishes, he has opened a new “boutique” in Hollywood.
“We opened it a month ago, but I can already say that Lee's idea has been successful. The sales demonstrate it”, says Christian, happy, after they’ve achieved to sell clothes that worth 1000$ to a group of Latin visitors from Miami, that they were dressed with clothes bought in Planet Alice. “Lee has a lot of energy and wonderful ideas" – he continues – "and when she starts to work, like today, the cash begins to sound”.
Ringo Starr and his first wife, Maureen, parents, like we’ve said before, of three children Zak, Jason and Lee, where divorced sixteen years ago, after having lived a great love story since their adolescence. Maureen was eighteen years old when she married Ringo. She worked then in a hairdresser of Liverpool and after marrying she passed of living in a modest neighbourhood with her family to a luxurious and elegant mansion in Tittenhurst Park, without limitation of expenses. However, those happy years would leave to the fret when Ringo, crawled by a vortex of the fame and the popularity, began to stop worrying of her and began to be related with other women. In the divorce demand that finally she had to outline, Maureen mentioned a model, Nancy Andrews, a young and very pretty dark-haired Californian woman, as the cause of the end of her marriage. This romance, however, didn't have a happy ending and time later the famous Beatles' drummer got married with the actress Barbara Bach, who had been married an Italian producer before. "I had never wanted to get divorced" - said Maureen later -."I adored Richie (it is this way she called to Ringo) and I felt a great affection and respect towards him." When her lawyer told her that to obtain the separation she should say to the judge that she didn't stand to live beside his husband, she cried bitterly and time later recognized: "I shouldn’t never have said that, because it was not true."
The three children of the marriage continued living with their mother, giving them Ringo Starr a generous pension. However, with time, Maureen claimed in the tribunals an increase of it sustaining that, used to the deluxe life that her husband had accustomed them, she had requested little money. "The boys continue living with me" - she said - "and for them I take this step." Each one followed their own road later and, in 1985, Ringo and Maureen became grandparents. Their older son, Zak, then aged nineteen years old and being drummer like his father, had a daughter named Tatia Jayne. Ringo Starr was the first member of the Beatles to become a grandfather. In that occasion Ringo Starr himself, his former-wife, Maureen, and with them their other two children Jason and Lee, they went together to the hospital where the little girl was born. Maureen Kox [sic] - this was her maiden name - married time later the millionaire Isaac Bach [sic] and in 1987 they had a daughter.

You Don't Look At Me (part 3)
words: 5.2k pairing: Joel x female!OC, Ellie x female!OC cw: strong languge, angst, violence, I might be forgetting stuff summary: Finally settled in Jackson with her new "family" things seem to go well enough until all crumbles.
note: thank you for your patience. Updates are coming much slower than I like, but I'm just really busy with school lately. I'm sorry for the long wait.
(prologue) (part 1) (part 2)
---
“Mornin’ sweetheart,” Julia said with a bright smile on her face as Lori sat herself down at the table in the kitchen. Lori smiled tiredly at her, still not being used to such a bright and bubbly personality around her. It was nice though and Lori accepted the change with an open mind.
Julia turned to the counter for a second before facing Lori again and placing a plate full of food in front of the girl. She snickered, seeing Lori’s face immediately brighten at the sight of eggs, bacon and some fresh baked bread buns. “Fresh baked bread?” Lori’s voice jumped an octave and her wide eyes snapped between Julia and Robert, who both chuckled. “This is fucking amazing—”
Instantly, the room filled with tension as Lori slapped her hand in front of her mouth. Robert bit his lip, feeling out the air and waiting for someone else to speak up first. It was Julia who spoke first after letting out a disappointed—nearly overexaggerated—sigh. “It’s okay,” she said with a throw of her hands. It was like she was telling it herself more than she was telling Lori. “I get it. You spent too much time with that grumpy man and that potty mouthed daughter of his.” Lori felt her hands clam up, but she said nothing, only nodded her head as her gaze fixed on her breakfast. “I’ll let it slide, but just mind your language.”
“Yes.” Ma’m, she had wanted to say. It was not the first time Julia had been visibly affected by Lori’s way of talking or doing, but it was the first time Lori had been actually scolded by the older woman. The usual light hearted and happy nature of the woman was pretty much indiscernible. Instead, Julia held a fake smile, with clear distaste behind it.
Robert chuckled awkwardly, “eat, Lori.” He nodded towards her food and walked around the table to his wife—quickly giving Lori’s shoulder a comforting squeeze. The couple then disappeared into the study slash office room and all Lori could hear was muffled conversation.
-
“Heeeey.” Lori hadn’t the time to look to the side before she felt someone sitting next to her. “So how’s Mrs. and Mr. perfect treating you?”
“What are you doing here?”
The person shifted awkwardly in their spot and Lori couldn’t help but curse herself. She knew that they had noticed the unusual quiver in her voice. “Are you— I— You told me you’d teach me how to solve these one day?” It sounded more like a question than it should have.
Lori watched Ellie’s finger come into her view as she pointed at the book of sudokus in front of her.
“Right…” Lori’s voice trailed and Ellie couldn’t help, but notice how off Lori seemed.
“I didn’t want to ask, but you got me worried.” Ellie chuckled hesitantly and Lori looked up to match her gaze. “Are you okay? I thought you felt happy with Julia and Robert.”
Lori nodded, expertly spinning her pencil between her fingers. “No, they’re great. I like it there a lot.”
Ellie grimaced at Lori’s unconvincing tone. “You sure?”
“I shouldn’t be spending time with you.”
Ellie seemed to take great offence to that statement. “Why? Did your new little family tell you that?” The amount of venom that laced that word. Family. Lori could feel a chill running down her spine, knowing she wouldn’t be able to forget the way Ellie said that word for the coming days at the least.
“They may have, but it’s me who thinks I shouldn’t be talking to you.”
In a split second, Ellie’s anger and defensiveness died. Her shoulder slumped and her face fell into a frown. “Why would you think that?” Despite the sadness, Ellie’s words still were harsh and pointed.
“I don’t think I ever liked you,” Lori stated, forgoing the chance to look at Ellie’s reaction by staring out to the people at the workshop just across where she and Ellie were sitting—at a table outside one of the meeting spaces of Jackson. “I hated you and then you became the reason I hate Joel, but luckily for you I’m sure I hate Joel more than you.”
Ellie’s mouth opened and closed for a few seconds before she ultimately decided against saying anything. She stood up with a loud and clear huff before childishly taking Lori’s book and harshly sliding it off the table. It snatched on some of the splintering wood, causing some tears in the pages. It then fell into a puddle of mud rendering the book likely unsalvageable. She then stormed off.
Lori was confident saying what she said, but rather unconfident in the truth of what she said.
-
Don’t come in here, Lori thought as she heard the footsteps coming up the stairs. Don’t come in here, she thought when the footsteps stopped before they walked down the hallway and the sound grew louder. Don’t come in here, she continued to think even when the doorknob of her room turned—she still couldn’t believe she had her own room—and the door opened. Don’t come in here, she wanted to say as she noticed Robert’s figure in the doorframe.
“What happened here?” His voice was soft. Robert held the dirty and teared puzzle book in the air by a corner of its cover. He turned his head, rather than the book itself to examine it.
“I dropped it in the mud earlier,” Lori whispered. “It’s fine, I finished them all already.”
Robert chuckled and carefully tossed the book into a bin—it was actually just an empty box that served as a bin. “I don’t think I have any other left. I can make you some myself, but that’ll take a while. Or I’ll just check the trading post next time, but—”
“It’s fine, I don’t want to do any more sudokus for a while.” It wasn’t a lie. Lori had felt like the sudokus were just a way of adults wanting to keep her busy so she wouldn’t be up in their business, or perhaps so they didn’t have to pay attention, for a while now. She just didn’t say anything because for this whole time, she genuinely enjoyed solving those puzzles. Now, however, she didn’t want to see any number in general. They were giving her headaches.
Robert’s smile fell and he sat down on the edge of Lori’s bed. “I thought you loved them?”
“I hate them.” It felt so easy to use that word now. Hate didn’t seem to have the same connotation to Lori as it had to other people. “I mean I’m sick of them.”
Robert nodded before asking Lori to move over a little. Once she did, he sat down next to her with his back against the headrest. “About this morning—”
“It’s okay. I understand. I’m living under your roof and I get that you wouldn’t want a teenager cursing every five seconds. It just slipped because I was excited.”
A soft hum came from the man and Lori brushed her hair to the front so Robert couldn’t see her face reddened by shame. “Kevin just never swore—”
“Your son?” Lori wasn’t asking actually and it was that moment Robert realised what he had said. “He seems so great with all the stories you’ve told me about him. Never swore, really smart, strong and helped out in the house, the neighbours loved him, handsome—”
“He was also stubborn.”
“Stubborn… I guess that’s what me and Kevin have in common,” Lori whispered. “Pretty hard standard to live up to,” she added in a chuckle.
A deep sigh sounded through the room as Robert let his body sink into the bed further. He turned his head to Lori. There was a soft yet careful look on his face. “You don’t have to live up to anyone, Lori. I shouldn’t have brought him up, but that’s why Julia reacted the way she did. She isn’t too fond of that kind of language and Kevin was raised that way.”
Lori nodded, but didn’t say anything. And then suddenly she felt a comforting warmth engulf her. Robert had placed his arm around her shoulders and with his right hand on her upper arm, he pulled her closer into his side. “I’m sorry, Lori. I’m sorry that happened, but Julia still cares so much. She just isn’t used to a tough girl like you.” There was a slight chuckle in his speech and although it was to comfort her, Lori didn’t know if it was achieving that goal.
“I guess so,” she whispered in response.
Robert patted Lori’s arm a few times before getting up and leaving her to “get some rest” in her room, alone.
-
The warmth of spring and summer passed in an instant and the cool air that accompanied mid-autumn chilled every house. The weather wasn’t the only thing that had grown cold over the months for Lori. Her relationships had developed in a rather similar way.
Ellie had continued to try and converse with Lori since that infamous exchange they had, but Lori hadn’t been all that welcoming to her. Eventually, Ellie stopped approaching her and by the time autumn fell, Lori hadn’t spoken to Ellie in at least a month.
Another relationship that had progressed similarly was her relationship with Tommy. Maria as well. They had barely spoken ever since Lori went to live with Robert and Julia. It was less surprising to Lori, though, since Tommy and Maria didn’t know Lori as long or in the same way Ellie did—although it sometimes felt that way. What did surprise Lori was that it felt like they went from being acquaintances to strangers and perhaps even had some bad blood. Whenever Lori went out and saw Tommy or Maria, they barely batted an eye at her and when they spotted her, Lori could’ve sworn that they turned away each time they locked eyes with her.
The most unexpected of such changes was her relationship with the woman who had taken her in. Julia did not like Lori. Lori just knew. She felt like she had to walk on eggshells the whole time she was in the house with Julia and so Lori had pretty much retreated into her room. She spent the most of her time either there or outside, though with the colder weather Lori didn’t have much things to do or warm places to go outside the house. She even went to the dining hall as much as possible to eat, since she would rather eat alone than sit through quiet and tense meals with Julia.
Lori felt like she was in no different situation than when she stayed at Tommy’s before, but it felt even worse now. Julia was rather cold towards her, while Tommy and Maria hadn’t been anything but welcoming. Sure they weren’t all overly sweet and familial, but Tommy and Maria were nice and they talked to her. Julia seemed like she’d do everything rather than talk to Lori if she could avoid doing so.
And then Julia blew her fuse.
The night it happened everything went downhill. Lori had just been roaming the empty house, bored by her lonesomeness, when she came upon something she had never seen before. A framed picture of a younger Robert and Julia along with a young kid—probably in his early teens—was displayed on a shelf in an unused room of the house. The boy was good looking. A perfect mixture of the best attributes of his parents. Lori knew why Robert and Julia never failed to boast about their son. Kevin had seemed like the kind, intelligent and just perfect son from what his parents had told Lori, but upon seeing that picture, she also knew he was handsome too.
Unconsciously, Lori traced her fingers along the textured frame around the picture. It had to have been dated pre- or early outbreak. The family seemed happy. A perfect family. Something the young girl had never experienced, or at least not in her memory.
The frame was held only loosely between her fingers as she was about to set it back, but then, suddenly, the door behind her opened. The heavy door stopped mid swing as it hit Lori’s back, causing the girl to lose her grip on the frame and it fell down on the floor. The glass of the frame shattered into what felt like a million tiny pieces and Lori felt like she heard each one of them scatter against the rough wooden floors before she heard the high pitched screaming behind her.
“WHAT DID YOU DO?”
Lori barely had any time to turn around before Julia yanked her to the side by her arm. The woman’s thin pointy fingers left small red marks through Lori’s long sleeve shirt.
“My baby—” she sobbed as she fell to her knees next to the broken picture frame. Surely, the pieces of glass had pierced the skin of her knees and legs, but neither Julia or Lori had the time to think about that in the midst of the situation. “You witch!”
Lori had been called many names before, but “witch” was a first. It wasn’t the word that shocked her, but the anger and hatred in Julia’s voice as she said it. “See what you did!” She pointed at the broken frame. “You did this on purpose!”
Lori tried to protest, to say it was an accident, but she wasn’t fast enough. Julia was already yelling again. “You’re ruining my family! You’re trying to tear us apart! You’ll never replace Kevin!”
She kept yelling out those nonsense statements, but Lori knew she believed them. She knew Julia thought that Lori really was trying to tear her family apart. What Julia didn’t know was that Lori already knew her place in this house. She’d never be a daughter to these people, but she had wanted it. She had prayed for it, but she knew it never would be.
Instead of running away, out of the house, Lori ran into her room. She didn’t know how much longer it would be her room for, so she wanted to bask in that warmth for as long as possible. She hid under her blanket as if hiding from Julia and Robert, who she knew wouldn’t be checking in with her anyway. The warmth she had expected to accompany her was not there. Lori fell asleep shivering from cold— no, from the fear of being inevitably kicked out the house and once again being alone, without anyone who cared about her.
-
Joel clicked his tongue in annoyance as he tried to ignore the looming presence behind him. He placed his lips on the edge of his glass of whiskey before downing it in one go. He wished the alcohol would distract him. It didn’t.
With a sigh, Joel sluggishly turned his body in his chair to face the bar. He leaned against the surface with his arms before turning his head slightly to the right. “What?” he grumbled with a roll of his eyes.
A tired, yet nervous laugh pierced Joel’s ears. No, the laugh wasn’t loud, but Joel found it truly unpleasant. “Hey,” the man next to Joel said in an exhale. It was as if he wanted to reason with him. “I guess we have more in common than I first thought.” Joel’s first instinct was to shut him up, yell at him or even just throw up at the thought of him and this man being similar. “Or more than I could wish.” He was speaking to himself now.
“If you don’t have anything coherent to say, then get lost.” Joel’s voice was gruff. No louder than it had been when he addressed the man the first time.
“I don’t know how you were able to take care of that girl for so long,” the man laughed again and Joel felt his stomach churn. Joel didn’t know what he was talking about, but Joel felt that anything that would leave his mouth right now wouldn’t be good. “Lori is impossible,” Robert sighed.
“What are you talking about?”
Robert eyed Joel before shaking his head a few times. “I get why you abandoned her. She’s more than a handful. You know this. I’m surprised you act like this is news.”
Ignoring the jab at him, Joel’s grip on his glass tightened and more questions than answers came to him. “Something happened?”
At his question, Joel noticed a moment of clarity in Robert’s eyes before they became hooded once more. Joel cursed himself knowing that his sudden eagerness to talk, to know what was happening, shut Robert up completely. The scrawnier of the two waved Joel off causing the latter to stand up suddenly and tower over him.
“Joel!” It was Tommy who yelled out for him before waving him over. Joel reluctantly left his glass on the bar, cursing Robert out with his eyes before turning to his brother.
“I thought he’d take care of her?”
Tommy eyed his brother with confused eyes. “What are you talking about?”
It was clear that Tommy didn’t know anything about Lori anymore. Once Robert had taken her in, Tommy pretty much stopped talking to her. All Tommy did was track that his easily aggravated brother was standing over a weaker man who he didn’t like with a clenched fist. He was preventing a bar fight. There was nothing more to it.
“Never mind.” Joel pushed past his brother and left the building.
-
It had been pretty much a full day since the picture incident when Lori was silently navigating the living room. Her eyes were set on the door leading up to Robert’s “office”. It was just a room with a desk and some papers and books. A place where he could prepare some classes for his students. It really was an office, but Lori knew that people pre-outbreak would probably laugh if they saw this “office” of Robert.
Coming up to the door, Lori stopped herself from barging in. She took a few deep breaths, calming her furiously beating heart before knocking on the door softly. She waited for an answer, which did come, in the form of a quiet hum.
The door was heavier than any other door in the house and this wasn’t because Lori was filled with anxiety at the moment. She had made this observation months ago, but yes, at this moment, the door felt heavier than normal.
Once inside she stood next to Robert’s desk. He was facing the wall across the door, his back was towards her at first. Lori stepped in a bit further until she was next to him, though still a little behind him. Not being able to see his face straight on or even from the side—even in this dimly lit room—made Lori feel a bit more in charge of her nerves. Her hands were behind her back, one of them holding something for Robert.
“What are you doing here?” Robert broke the silence first, which is what Lori wanted, but it made her jump. His voice was a lot more rough, cold and distant than she remembered. Even when he came home from long, tiring days at work, there was usually a little lilt in the way he talked. “It’s late, go to bed.”
“I got you this,” Lori whispered. She stretched out her arm, presenting Robert with a rather nice picture frame. “I traded for it earlier—”
“What’s this?” he interrupted her with a clear annoyed tone.
Lori spluttered to fight the surprise and find her words again. “I’m sorry I broke your picture with Ke—”
“DO NOT DARE SAY HIS NAME!” Lori immediately cowered at the sudden rise of Robert’s voice. He never screamed. Not like this. “And do you know what else you broke? Huh? Do you?” he continued to yell as he asked her these questions. Lori shook her head frantically.
“You broke my family! MY family!” At that point, Robert had already stood up and was closing in the gap between him and Lori, driving the young girl toward the wall behind her. He snatched the picture frame out of her hands. “And you know what?” Lori shook her head again, scared that not responding to him would be worse. “You are not part of my family!”
Pieces of glass fell to the floor before either of them had registered what had happened. Lori watched in horror as the side of her face felt numb. Warm blood started to trickle down her temple and down to her cheek. Her eyes looked at Robert’s hand that was holding the picture frame before. It was still there. Partly. Only two of the four sides of the wooden frame were still intact and in his grasp, the remainder of it was scattered on the floor in pieces. Lori looked up at Robert’s face, wishing she’d see any kind of remorse for his actions, but there was only anger. Not long after, Robert hit her a second time with the now broken frame.
Lori fell to the floor, holding her hands up to shield her face. “S-sorry,” she sobbed incoherently. Scared. Terrified. However, Robert couldn’t hear her, or he was ignoring her pleas on purpose.
“You fucking bitch!” he yelled as he kicked her angrily in her side. “You’ve ruined my whole family!”
Lori tried to push the man away. She was able to grip his leg and push it away, but it only made him drop to his knees and punch her on the side of her face. “Nobody fucking wants you! Not Joel! Not Tommy!” He was punching her after each name, though he was mostly missing her and there was no real strength behind his punches. “And definitely not me!”
Robert was sobbing when Julia ran into the room. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and comforted him as if he was just the victim of an attack. “Get out.” Robbert had tried to sob, but it was Julia who had hissed those words at Lori.
The girl didn’t need to be told twice. She pushed herself up, not even feeling the tiny pieces of glass underneath her palm piercing her skin, and limped out of the room. Luckily Lori had left her backpack with her most important stuff on the living room floor so she could leave immediately. She somehow had a feeling this was how the night was going to end.
–
Something was off. Joel could just sense it.
As he walked home from his patrol shift he decided to make a quick stop along the way. It was actually his own body that led him to this place unconsciously, but as he stood there and clocked where he was, he felt determined. His heavy fist knocked on the door that almost fully swung open by itself. Joel grabbed the doorknob, stopping the door from opening and waited until the homeowners came and answered themselves.
The whole time during patrol, Joel kept thinking back about what Robert had said the night before at the bar. Robert loved Lori. That’s how Joel knew him. He was the man that took the place Joel wanted to be in. Well, needed to be in. In the months after his last conversation with Lori he slowly came to terms that he had created a distance between himself and Lori. He did want to care for her, but he wasn’t ready to fight all his demons that prevented him from doing so.
It all came so easy with Ellie. Maybe because they were so similar. Still, Joel wondered why he had such a hard time connecting and opening up to Lori. It was probably because Lori was too much like Tess. Possibly—and this was the hardest thing he had to come to terms with—before Lori had turned all stoic—because of Joel—Lori reminded Joel a bit of his own daughter. His actual daughter. Sarah—
Back to Robert. Robert and Lori seemed to get along so well, which is why Joel had been so surprised to hear Robert talking about her like that the day before. Something felt so wrong about it.
“Hi—What are you doing here?”
Joel looked up to see Robert staring back at him. The light-haired man seemed different. His features looked sunken in, his posture was slouched. He looked nothing like the happy teacher everyone knew him as.
“Lori… Just after what you said yesterday. I guess I wanted to check if everything is fine?”
Robert heaved an annoyed breath, but there was something else in his eyes. He almost seemed fearful of Joel, or at least of something. “Everything’s fine.”
It didn’t seem like everything was fine. “Is she here?”
“No she isn’t.” Julia’s voice ringed towards the front door as she moved to stand beside her husband. “She isn’t here, so if you’re looking for her, get lost.”
The aggression in the small woman’s voice made the hairs on Joel’s arms and back of his neck stand up. “Where—”
“Not here!” Julia tried to close the door, but Joel held it open with his forearm. Julia started shouting at him, but Joel didn’t let up. Instead his eyes started to wander. The living room behind the couple seemed normal. It was only when Joel took a step back, he noticed the bruised knuckles of Robert’s right hand. Joel was about to say something when Robert moved his hand behind his back, out of Joel’s vision. “Just leave!” Julia yelled.
“What did you—” Joel started to ask. He had looked from Roberts slightly bloodied—then hidden—hand up his arm until he met his eyes. The fear he thought he saw before was prominent now. Thoughts filled Joel’s head causing to let his guard down and before he could ask his full question, Julia took the opportunity to shut the door closed in his face.
-
“I—” A sob from deep down cut off her words. “I’m so sorry, Tess.” Lori’s voice was shaky. She sat, kneeled down, somewhere quiet. Away from everyone. Not more than a 5 minute walk from Jackson, but at this time she shouldn’t be outside. She had been able to slip away without anyone noticing so she could have some space.
“I know you’d hate me for this,” she cried, but she tried so hard not to. Her voice was strained to keep the sobs at bay. “But I tried so hard to be a good daughter. To be good to people. They just—” Lori took another deep sigh before her tears started to flow freely down her cheeks. “No one wants me. No one likes me. Only you ever truly cared.”
The tension in Lori’s body started to ease as if she was starting to accept the reality of how everything was turning out for her. “I know you’d hate me, but can you really blame me for this?” Lori let out a defeated chuckle, then sniffled once again. “I just want to be with you again,” she whispered before putting a bit more pressure on the knife she had against her left wrist.
The blade only barely broke her skin. It wasn’t sharp enough to do anything more with the amount of pressure Lori was putting on it.
“I only ever want to be with you. Maybe I’m wrong and you are like everyone else, but I rather be with you, who hates me, then with all these people.”
Lori finally drew blood. She didn’t even hiss or flinch as the blade pressed further into her skin. “Tess,” she sobbed as she said her name. “I miss you so much! Why did you leave! Why did you fucking leave me!”
Lori raised the knife from her skin and moved it further up so she could make one final cut.
“LORI, NO!”
The world became dark before her eyes, as Lori fell back onto her back. Before the metal was able to make contact with her wrist, Lori had been pulled back, causing her head to hit the cold ground. Her arm, along with her hand that was holding the knife was pulled back and the knife fell out of her grasp. When Lori opened her eyes again she was met with the frantically moving eyes of Ellie.
“Lori!” The younger girl shouted in shock. She was shaking Lori by her shoulders and checking her body for any injuries. To her surprise Lori’s wrist had barely a cut on it, but her face was something else. Ellie’s eyes scanned the new bruises that seemed to be getting darker by the second on her face. A trail of blood was mixed with Lori’s tears and coated the skin of her cheek and neck with a light, translucent red sheen.
The two sat there almost frozen as they stared at each other before Ellie started pulling her up. “Let’s go—”
“Go where?”
“Home,” Ellie stated, still in her panicked state. She noticed how Lori froze in her spot again and was staring at her, uncertainty filled in her gaze. “Please, Lori. Let’s just go.”
It was desperate. All the words that left Ellie’s mouth. Her movements as she pulled Lori to her feet. As if Lori was someone important to Ellie and Ellie wanted her to be okay.
Ellie gathered Lori’s backpack before pulling her arm over her own shoulders. “You can sleep in my bed. The fireplace has been warming the house. It’s safe there, okay? I can get you food or tea as well. And there’s warm water to shower in. Or you can take a bath…”
Lori didn’t answer, but she let Ellie take her with her.
A few metres away Joel finally found the two girls. He wanted to approach them, but decided against it as he noticed how Lori was so willing to have Ellie help her out. He didn’t want to disturb them.
He was still heaving from his search before he completely froze, hearing what Ellie told Lori.
“I know I’m not Tess, but you’re safe with me. I know you hate me, but even if I’m the last person you wanted to care for you, I do care. Even if the whole world is against you, I’ll be here. And maybe it’s just selfish, but it’s because I need you too.”
Lori tilted her head slightly down to catch Ellie’s gaze. More tears started to roll down her cheeks.
“I think you’re really fucking cool,” Ellie sniffled in a watery chuckle. “And to be honest, I don’t think I would’ve felt as much at ease without you around. You’ve protected me even when you hated my guts and I don’t think I’m ready to lose you. I don’t want you to join Tess this early and I know she wouldn’t want that either.” Lori didn’t say anything as she continued to share eye contact with the younger girl.
“Let’s go home, okay? With me?”
